How to Send Big Video Files Online
Video delivery works best when the recipient knows what to expect. Upload the finished file, share a private link and give clear instructions about the format and download deadline.
Send the video by link instead of attachment
Open the GetMyFiles uploader and select your finished video. After the upload completes, copy the private link into your email or message. Your recipient opens the transfer and downloads the video without creating an account. For a guest transfer, you do not need to sign up either. This keeps the large file separate from the conversation carrying the delivery.
Choose the final version before uploading, particularly if you have several exports with similar names. GetMyFiles replaces original transfer basenames with neutral labels and generated download names. Tell your recipient what the delivery contains in the message, because an internal editing filename will not be displayed as a guide to which version is which.
Check both total size and individual-file size
Guest and Free transfers support up to 2 GB in total. Free accounts include 10 transfers a month, and a transfer can contain up to 200 files. A single video for a free transfer must fit within the 2 GB allowance; adding several clips does not give each one a separate 2 GB allocation. Check the actual file size after exporting.
Tier 1 supports 10 GB per transfer and Tier 2 supports 50 GB, but the current paid individual-file ceiling is 5 GB. A larger total-transfer allowance does not mean you can upload one video of that size. Unlimited removes application-level total-transfer and transfer-count caps, while infrastructure, file-count and fair-use restrictions remain. Always check the limit shown by the uploader.
Prepare an export the recipient can use
Common video formats such as MP4, MOV and WebM are accepted. A filename extension alone does not guarantee playback in every browser: the video and audio codecs also matter. If your recipient uses editing software, agree the format and intended use before sending. For a viewing copy, choose an export suitable for their device using your existing editing tools.
GetMyFiles is a delivery service, not a video transcoder or editor. It does not turn a large original into a smaller export or guarantee that every professional video format has a browser preview. Keep your original master and review any export you create yourself. A smaller file can be useful for review, but quality and delivery requirements should guide that decision.
Allow time for upload and recover carefully
Uploading a large video takes time, depending on its size and your connection. Keep the uploader open until the transfer has finished and the share link is ready. Avoid starting a delivery at the last moment when the recipient has an urgent deadline. No added guide or plan changes the speed of your home, studio or mobile connection.
If one file fails, use the file’s retry control rather than assuming the completed transfer exists. Retain your local copies throughout the process. On the receiving side, single-file downloads support byte ranges, which can help compatible browsers or download managers resume. Resumption still depends on the tool, network and link validity; it is not a promise that every interrupted download will recover.
Keep multi-file projects organised
If the delivery includes a video, separate audio and supporting documents, folders can make the hand-off clearer. Folder uploads preserve nested structure and recipients can navigate into each folder. Eligible ZIP downloads retain that hierarchy with anonymous basenames. For large deliveries, individual files may be more practical than an archive that exceeds the ZIP limit.
Folder names are visible and file contents are not anonymised. Use non-sensitive folder labels and explain the project in your message. Original transfer basenames are deliberately replaced, which may not suit an editing project that requires exact filenames for relinking media. Test a small representative project before using the service for that kind of hand-off.
Choose a deadline and plan for the delivery
Guest and Free links last 7 days. When creating a transfer, Tier 1 can choose expiry up to 30 days, Tier 2 up to 1 year, and Unlimited can choose never to expire. Changing account settings does not extend an existing link.
Share the link only with intended recipients: its token is unguessable, but anyone with the valid link can access the files. Tell the recipient to download before expiry and keep their own copy. A link expiring does not remove videos already downloaded. Paid branding can add your logo and message to new recipient pages without changing these access boundaries.
Tier 1 is £8.99/month or £89/year; Tier 2 is £14.99/month or £149/year; Unlimited is £24.99/month or £249/year.
Common questions
- Can I send a video for free?
- Yes, if the total transfer fits within 2 GB and the supported-file and file-count rules. Guest links expire after 7 days.
- Can Tier 2 send one 50 GB video?
- No. Tier 2 allows 50 GB in total per transfer, but the current paid individual-file ceiling is 5 GB.
- Will every video play in the browser?
- No. Preview support depends on the format, codec and browser. The recipient may need to download and open the file in suitable software.
